Stirrer Definition

In a narrow sense, the stirrer is known as the stirring paddle and the stirring impeller as well, which is the key component of stirring reaction equipment. It can provide the energy and suitable flow state required by the stirring process. But in general, a stirrer can be used to refer to the stirring equipment, such as magnetic stirrers and overhead stirrers.

Types of Stirrers

As we mentioned above, stirrers can refer to the stirring equipment. There are a great variety of stirrers available for laboratory use, which mainly includes the following types.

1. Magnetic Stirrer

The magnetic stirrer is a laboratory device that can create a rotating magnetic field so that the liquid can be stirred automatically and quickly by a magnetic stirring bar. It generally play a key role in minimizing the risk of contamination since there is only an inert magnet bar that is placed inside the liquid sample. Hence, it can be used in many fields, such as food industry, chemical industry as well as biological field. But the magnetic stirrers are not suitable for stirring large volumes and high-viscosity substances and can only be used in relatively small experiments.

2. Overhead Stirrer

The overhead stirrer is a mechanical laboratory stirring equipment. It can’t be simply replaced by a magnetic stirrer, because it can be used to mix, homogenize, suspend, and recirculate large volumes and high-viscosity substances that can’t be handled by a magnetic stirrer.

3. Hot Plate Stirrer

The hot plate stirrer can be regarded as a kind of magnetic stirrer combined with a hot plate, which is known as the hot plate magnetic as well. It can keep liquids being stirred automatically as they are heated for a faster reaction.

Working Principle of Magnetic Stirrers

The magnetic stirrer is commonly used in chemical, food, pharmaceutical, cosmetics, environmental protection and other fields. It has a simple operation, and the stirring speed and direction can be adjusted according to the requirements of users. The basic working principle is that like magnetic fields repel each other while unlike ones attract. The magnetic stirrer placed in the container is pushed by the magnetic field for circular operation to stir liquid. With the heating temperature control system, it can heat and control the temperature of the sample according to the specific experimental requirements, and maintain the temperature condition required by the experiment, ensuring that the mixed liquid meets the experimental requirements.
