Distillation is an integral process in the cannabis oil extraction industry.

In order to extract higher quality and purer cannabis extract, SPD and WFD are two methods commonly used in cannabis extraction process.

This article will specifically discuss the commonalities and differences between these two distillation methods.

What is Distillation?

Distillation is a thermodynamic separation process that utilizes the different boiling points of each component in a mixed liquid or liquid-solid system to evaporate the low-boiling component and then condense to separate the entire component. It is a combination of two unit operations of evaporation and condensation.

Compared with other separation methods, such as extraction, filtration crystallization, etc., its advantage is that it does not need to use other solvents other than system components, thereby ensuring that no new impurities are introduced.

A key process in extracting cannabis is distillation.

Short Path Distillation in Cannabis Industry

Short-path distillation is a relatively new liquid-liquid separation technology, which can solve many problems that cannot be solved by conventional distillation technology.

The light components in the material are heated and evaporated into a gaseous state under the action of the wiped film evaporator. Since the distance from the evaporation surface to the condensation surface is very short, the gaseous components can be quickly condensed into liquid on the outer surface of the condenser, thus realizing the separation of the light and heavy components.

Short path distillation has the ability to separate compounds. Cannabis processing manufacturers use this feature to isolate and purify the cannabinoids in cannabis. A high-purity, high-quality concentrate is obtained that can be sold individually or further processed into various products.

Wiped Film Distillation

Short path distillation produces a high quality finished product. However, due to its scale limitations, large-scale cannabis extraction is mostly used in wiped film distillation.
Compared with short path distillation, wiped film distillation has a continuous feeding system, simple and efficient operation, and is suitable for large-scale essential oil extraction.

In the wiped film process, the material is transported from the feed port to the inner wall of the vertical cylindrical evaporator, where it is heated from the outer wall. Inside, the liquid flows down into the inner wall to form a thin film. The moving liquid is heated. The low-boiling liquid begins to evaporate. Heavier residue materials (chlorophyll, macrolipids, salts, sugars, heavy wax fractions) do not evaporate and travel down the still to fall into the residue receiving bottle.
